Solventum plans to separate its coding and CDI software unit, home to 360 Encompass

On August 5, 2026, Solventum announced its intent to separate its Health Information Systems business, the software unit that sells computer-assisted coding, clinical documentation integrity, and revenue-cycle tools to hospitals. Solventum said it is weighing a standalone company, a combination with another firm, or another transaction, and is targeting completion within 12 to 18 months.

Solventum framed the move as a way to unlock value, with CEO Bryan Hanson saying separation "can unlock value by enabling both businesses to pursue distinct growth agendas." The company was explicit that no decision has been made on the ultimate structure or timing.

For a coder or an HIM lead, the story isn't the corporate mechanics. It is that the vendor behind the coding and documentation software on your desk just put that business in play.

What the Health Information Systems business actually is

Solventum reports the Health Information Systems business generates about $1.4 billion in annual sales, operates in more than 30 countries, and serves more than 75% of U.S. hospitals. It says the software processes roughly 660 million clinical documents each month.

The unit is home to 360 Encompass, long known in coding departments as 3M 360 Encompass and now sold by Solventum, which combines computer-assisted coding, clinical documentation integrity, professional coding, and auditing in one platform. If your hospital codes inpatient or professional work through a CAC engine and a CDI worklist, there is a real chance it runs on this software.

Why this lands on the coding and HIM desk

A coding platform used across most U.S. hospitals isn't a swappable vendor. A change of ownership can touch the things a coding operation quietly depends on: the roadmap for new features, the price at renewal, the response you get when an edit breaks, and the portability of the coding rules and CDI content your team has tuned over years.

It also lands while federal auditors are taking a hard look at how accurate AI coding really is, which raises the stakes on any coding-tool transition. None of that shifts the day the press release goes out. But it is exactly the kind of thing an HIM director wants on the record before the next contract cycle, not after.

Autonomous coding still runs through a human coder

Solventum markets "AI-driven autonomous coding" as part of the business. Its own product page describes a system that final-codes qualifying outpatient and professional visits with no coder interaction, while routing complex or flagged visits to a coder for review.

That is the same line every autonomous-coding pitch draws: the tool clears the easy charts and hands the hard ones back. The coder's work moves up the difficulty curve. It doesn't disappear. Independent studies keep finding general-purpose AI struggles most on the complex charts, and regulators have told coders to verify every AI-surfaced diagnosis rather than trust the tool. The same gap shows up with AI-generated notes, which still need a coder's QA pass. A separation, a sale, or a new owner doesn't change who confirms that the documentation actually supports the code, against the MEAT standard. That is still the coder.

A vendor-transition checklist for coding and CDI teams

If your operation runs on 360 Encompass, or on any single coding platform, a separation window is a good reason to ask the questions you should be asking anyway.

What is not changing yet

This is an announced intent, not a signed deal. Solventum hasn't named a structure or a buyer, and it put the timeline at 12 to 18 months. The code set, the coding guidelines, the HCC model, and your submission deadlines are all the same as yesterday. Keep coding to that standard this week, and hand the vendor questions to whoever owns your software contracts. That part of the job is not for sale.
