What Is an NPI Number?
An NPI (National Provider Identifier) is a unique 10-digit number assigned to healthcare providers by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). All HIPAA-covered providers must have an NPI. HCC Buddy searches 9.37 million providers from the NPPES registry with partial-name matching and credential parsing, so coders can verify a rendering provider without leaving their ICD-10 workflow.
How It Works
Search by name
Enter a provider's first or last name. Credentials such as MD, DO, NP, and PA are auto-detected.
Filter by state
Narrow results to a specific state or territory by typing the abbreviation in the query.
Expanded matching
The lookup checks alternate spellings and common transcription variants automatically.
Why NPI lookup matters in HCC coding
Risk adjustment audits require coders to verify that each diagnosis has a qualified rendering provider. When a provider name in the chart doesn't match the NPI on the claim, or a group NPI is used where an individual NPI is required, it creates an audit exposure. The NPI lookup inside HCC Buddy lets coders verify provider records during the coding session, without switching to the NPPES website or a separate tab.
The lookup returns NPI type (individual or organization), taxonomy codes, practice address, and last NPPES update date, covering the fields most often needed during RADV preparation and chart review.
