Clinical Significance
Antisocial personality disorder is characterized by a pervasive pattern of disregard for and violation of the rights of others, with onset of conduct symptoms before age 15. This condition is strongly associated with substance use disorders, incarceration, homelessness, and high-risk behaviors. It significantly complicates healthcare delivery through poor treatment compliance, manipulation, and adversarial clinical encounters.
Documentation Requirements
- ✓Documentation of pervasive pattern of disregard for/violation of others' rights since age 15
- ✓Evidence of conduct disorder onset before age 15 (required criterion)
- ✓At least three of: failure to conform to social norms, deceitfulness, impulsivity, irritability/aggressiveness, reckless disregard for safety, consistent irresponsibility, lack of remorse
- ✓Patient must be at least 18 years old
- ✓Pattern not occurring exclusively during schizophrenia or bipolar disorder
