What This Code Means

A benign (non-cancerous) smooth muscle tumor of the uterus, also commonly called a fibroid, when the specific location within the uterus is not documented. These tumors are very common in women of reproductive age and may cause heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, or pressure symptoms.

Coding Tips

• •Use D25.9 only when the documentation does not specify the location of the leiomyoma; if the site is documented (such as submucosal, intramural, or subserosal), assign the more specific D25.0-D25.2 codes instead
• •Verify whether the patient has symptoms related to the fibroid (such as abnormal uterine bleeding coded as N93.-) to ensure complete coding of the clinical picture
